Oak Grove School (aka Shady Nook School)

This school was located on Cty B (west of Kingston about 3.5 miles) at the foot of the hill by the O'Keefe farm The property was donated by William Hunter. Today, the Grand River Oasis is situated on the property and serves authentic Mexican dishes. The school was sometimes referred to as the Shady Nook School or the O'Keefe school. This photo dates to around 1910-1912 (?). The teachers were responsible for all 8 grades which in most cases of one-room country schools amounted to no more than 15-18 students. When this school was closed in 1940 the students then attended the Russell School, located several miles west on Cty B.

Buster and Grace Hunter purchased the Oak Grove School and placed it on a new foundation and made it into a residence and bar.

Thank you to Jerry Hunter for sharing information about the Oak Grove School. He recalled that a teacher by the name of Edna O'Keefe was also in charge of the school at one time. He did not attend the Oak Grove school but did go to the Russell School.

The Marquette Historical Society would appreciate having more stories, photos, etc. on the history of this school.
