Maple Hill Side School-Hilltop Road

Pictured in front of the new Maple Hill Side School are: (left to right) Lloyd Marquart, Shirley Tym, Velma Sell, Glen Marquart, unknown, Gilbert Henslin and Rubin Tetzlaff.  The new school was built in 1904 on the same location where an earlier Maple Hill Side School existed (photo on right).

This picture might date from around 1914.

The new Maple Hill Side School with students and their teacher, Arnold Loeffler.  Gilbert Henslin is standing in the first row far right side.

The school was located east of Marquette on Hilltop Road about 2.3 miles.  The structure still exists and has been remodeled  into a nice home.

This picture is of the old Maple Hill Side School which was later replaced with a new structure in 1904. The date of this photo is unknown. The boys in the front row left to right are: Wilbert Berndt, Otto Plath, Elery Marquart, Dick Plath and Donald Berndt. The exact identity of the girls standing in the back row is not known but may be as follows left to right: Leona Marquart or Gladys Marquart, 3 & 4 unknown, Meta Berndt, Jessie Marquart (tall), 7 & 8 girls unknown. The teacher on the right side of the photo is Mrs. Art Degener ? (sp).

Irene Jahnke, wife of Walter Jahnke, also taught at this school during the later years of its operation.

According to Gilbert Henslin, the old school building was moved to the Loeffler farm a mile away and was used as a wood shed for many years before it was torn down by Walter Jahnke in 1975.

Marquette Historical Society would like to have more information as to when the school was no longer in operation and the names of students and teachers over the years.

A special thank you to the Gilbert Henslin family for the information and photos about the Maple Hill
Side School.
