Before modern refrigeration, ice from the lake was harvested for "ice-boxes" to keep food cool and fresh. All of the early cottages in the area relied on a steady source of ice for their units throughout the summer months. Large blocks of ice were cut with a gasoline saw mounted on a sled and then trucked to the the "ice house." This photo shows the crew at work and this ice was stored in Sparky's Ice House in Marquette. The blocks of ice were stacked in a large barn-like building and cover with tons of saw-dust to stop the ice from melting. Sparky's "Ice-House" was located where Matt Dickerson lives today in Marquette..
